BOARD SETS APPOINTMENT FOR TROY ANTHONY DAVIS

Parole Board will consider executive clemency for death row inmate
July 5, 2007;

  
Atlanta , GA – The State Board of Pardons and Paroles has invited representatives for condemned inmate Troy Anthony Davis, 38, to meet with the Board Monday, July 16, 2007, at 9:00 a.m. The representatives are expected to ask for clemency for Davis who is scheduled to die by lethal injection July 17, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, Georgia.
 
Davis murdered Savannah Police Officer Mark MacPhail, 27, on August 19, 1989 in the parking lot of the Burger King restaurant located at 601W. Oglethorpe Avenue. At approximately 1:00 a.m. on August 19, 1989, Officer MacPhail was working in an off-duty capacity as a security officer at the Greyhound Bus Terminal which was connected to the Burger King building. Officer MacPhail went to the parking lot of the Burger King restaurant to assist a victim who had been followed to the parking lot and assaulted by Davis and two other males. Davis shot Officer MacPhail and continued shooting him as he lay on the ground. Davis surrendered on August 23, 1989.
 
The Board appointment will not be open to the media, but a photo opportunity will be afforded prior to the start of the appointment. Media should check in with credentials by 8:45 a.m. in the Board’s public reception office at 2 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, East Tower 4 th Floor, Room 458. Members of the media will be given an opportunity to wait until the conclusion of the appointment to interview those seeking executive clemency for Davis, if they so choose to grant interviews.
